Introduction

Funktional Sleep Solutions began in 2005 to provide sleep apnea testing and CPAP treatment and support services in rural areas. Our system of establishing local clinics has been well received and allowed us to test, treat, and support thousands of Albertans.

Donald Funk, M.Sc., is the Director of Funktional Sleep Solutions.

We use the Respironics Stardust II and the Remmers Sleep Recorder to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Interpretation services are provided by several Pulmonologists and sleep specialists.

We provide education about lifestyle or sleeping habit changes that helps people cope with OSA. A CPAP device (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is the most common and effective treatment for OSA. CPAP devices provide a non-medicated and non-surgical approach to OSA treatment.

Education

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a condition in which breathing is interrupted during sleep (“apnea” is a Greek word meaning “without breath”). Apneas are due to the throat narrowing or blocking during sleep. OSA causes sleep disturbances, daytime sleepiness, and impaired daytime work performance. 6-8% of women and 12-15% of men have OSA.

OSA is associated with higher blood pressure, fasting insulin (related to diabetes), and decreased HDL (good cholesterol). Untreated severe sleep apnea is related to increased heart attack and stroke.

Other results of untreated OSA...

  • Decreased alertness, memory, and concentration.
  • Loud snoring, morning headaches, weight gain, and increased irritability.
  • People with untreated OSA are 3 times as likely to have a vehicle accident.
  • Increased self-medication and substance abuse.
  • Increased doctor visits, diagnostic tests, and use of hospital services.
  • Increased short-term disability claims.
